At some point, I inevitably get asked “Okay, Jillian…why the focus on small town, hospital romances?” But the more stories I write, the more I find myself drawn to small-town medical settings. There’s a natural structure there that works for storytelling. In a small community, the hospital is part of everyday life. The people who work there are visible, familiar, and connected to the town. The nurse might be your neighbor. The paramedic might be someone you went to school with. The doctor might run into patients at the grocery store. That closeness raises the emotional stakes in a very organic way. Relationships extend beyond shift schedules and exam rooms, so why can’t romance work the same way? For me, that environment offers endless opportunities. There are a lot of long shifts on the hospital floor and people rely on each other in ways that quickly strip away formality. Coworkers see each other at their best and admittedly their worst; sometimes surviving on caffeine and a prayer (I tell no lies). And then there’s the town itself. Small communities tend to be invested in everything, especially relationships. People celebrate together, worry together, speculate together, and occasionally meddle with the best of intentions! I love that dynamic because I feel it adds warmth, humor, and texture to a story. I’ve always been drawn to hospital romances since it’s a setting I can uncannily relate to. My heroes and heroines live in a fictional (but not too fictional in all honesty) world that is built on responsibility, resilience, empathy, and showing up when it matters most. Set those stories in a small town, and BOOM! …everything just becomes more layered. For romance, small-town hospitals just work. The emotions run high, the connections run deep, and nobody gets to hide for very long. It’s small town romance in small rural towns - what could go wrong? Which probably means Yukon Valley isn’t letting me go anytime soon. Leave a Reply. |
