Writing First-Responder Romance5/11/2026 I’ve spent a lot of time in Yukon Valley lately, and I’m not complaining about it. Heck, if you aren't following me on social media then you may have even missed my recent announcement that I've got my next book in Yukon Valley set to release at the end of 2026! I. Love. It. I also love that mix of small-town life, Alaskan wilderness, and a community that refuses to stay out of each other’s business. That combo keeps pulling me back in. Add in the hospital, the first responders, and the constant sense that things can go sideways at any moment (literally, always does and never lets up!), and it has become a pretty interesting place to tell a love story.
Part of that comes from the fact that I work in the medical field. I don’t just sit around dreaming up these scenarios. I’ve seen pieces of them. Lived some of them. Probably more than I realize until I stop and think about it for a minute. Some situations have been better than other, but they've all stuck with me in a way that made me think "huh, maybe there's a way to weave this into a story somehow." To do so in a romance novel, while remaining medically-accurate, has been a challenging bit of artistry that I’ve come to love. People in these roles are fascinating to me. I'm talking about ALL first responders in ALL areas and capacities. They’re capable, steady under pressure, and show up when it matters most. Take firefighters as one example. They’re the ones running toward a situation while everyone else is trying to get away from it. They make quick decisions, they carry responsibility, and they are never afforded the luxury of a moment to hesitate. But when it comes to their personal lives? That’s sometimes a completely different story. They’re busy. They’re tired. They’ve seen things that stick with them. Letting someone in, REALLY letting someone see them, isn’t always the easiest step to take. Which makes them incredibly interesting to write. That’s where a medical romance story starts to take shape for me. How can I blend a high stakes profession with a relatable and layered character? Then, how can I find a partner for them that's believable? And THEN, how can I bring them together in a way that's real and moves the readers to cheer for their HEA? I get to take pieces of what I know and use them as imperfect building blocks. I do it in a way that feels real enough to matter. Characters who are layered, a little worn around the edges, and trying to figure things out like the rest of us. Oh, and they have people’s lives in their hands. And then I get to drop a relationship into the middle of all that. It's my secret recipe creating medical romance stories I am immensely proud of. Now, these relationships like these are almost never convenient. It’s always right in the middle of the chaos, where emotions run high and survival isn’t guaranteed. That’s where things get interesting and readers get to follow along as my characters understand themselves on a deeper level and they can see that "AHA!" moment where everything just...clicks…with that other person. Because when someone spends their life showing up for everyone else, it matters a little more when they finally choose to show up for one person. That kind of love doesn’t come easy. And that’s exactly why it’s worth writing. Leave a Reply. |
